Year 4 and 6 Nature Rangers Term 2 Session 1

3rd Mar 2025

Our Year 4 and 5 Nature Rangers had a fantastic outdoor learning session, diving into the fascinating world of bird nest construction. The focus of the session was on swallows' nests, giving the children an up-close look at how these incredible birds build their homes.  We began by carefully observing a real swallow’s nest, noting the materials used—mud, grass, feathers, and other natural elements. The children examined how the nest was structured, discussing why swallows choose certain materials and how the design helps keep their eggs and chicks safe.  Inspired by nature’s builders, the children then worked in small groups to create their own nests using materials they collected from the surrounding area. This hands-on activity encouraged teamwork, problem-solving, and a deeper appreciation for the skill and effort that goes into nest-building.  To round off the session, we gathered around a small fire to enjoy a well-earned treat—s’mores! It was the perfect way to end a day of discovery, creativity, and outdoor fun.
